ÿþ
2010 BCMS LEADERS

Spotlight on our 2010 BCMS Leaders

By Sarah E. Thomas

What new thing can you say about Donald Joseph Gordon, MD, PhD in an article intended to showcase the leaders of the BCMS? Hmmmm…

Dr. Donald J. Gordon has been an active participant of all BCMS committees―except the Women in Medicine Committee!

Dr. Gordon did an excellent job of introducing himself to the membership in the January 2010 San Antonio Medicine magazine. Adding to his introduction are the facts that Dr. Gordon is a kind, caring human (first) who’s a wiz at organizing and preparing, and he’s computer literate. He truly cares about the way people perceive “the idea of physicians”, rather than how physicians perceive him, or themselves. Dr. Gordon will look to those who will lead the way to a brighter future, those who will get on board the tide and ride the waves. He will serve BCMS well because he exemplifies service for and active participation in all that he exhibits passion.

Jesse Moss Jr., MD, MS, FACS is the 2010 BCMS President-Elect; and, will be our president in 2011.

Dr. Moss, not unlike the other members of the BCMS Executive Committee/Board of Directors, has been an active participant, on all levels, in organizations/groups focused on medicine. He seems to be a gentle soul―with a strange sense of humor, until you get to know him. Getting to know him rarely takes more than 5 minutes. Dr. Moss is married to Gloria, and is in private practice as a board certified Otolaryngologist and Head & Neck Surgeon.

He is zealous about medicine and medical care―for patients, for physicians and medical personnel, and for our regulatory entities that govern our health care system. He’s a learned man; but, one who seems to value the benefits of learning more in order to stay abreast of upcoming issues that might affect his commitment to BCMS and medicine/health care.

Roberto Trevino Jr., MD is the 2010 BCMS Vice President.

Dr. Trevino has served BCMS for many years, like Dr. Gordon. His service to BCMS has been in many areas, especially the financial aspect. Having served on the Management Holding and Finance Committees, Dr. Trevino also has experience serving on both the TMA and BCMS Foundations. He has an overall ‘feel’ for the society because he has been a part of, and chaired, several of the BCMS committees. His drive has proven a positive attribute for BCMS.

A family man, Dr. Trevino and his wife, Lisa, are the parents of two daughters. Lisa is the Alliance Vice President of Social Affairs, and both seem very dedicated to the upbringing of possibly future medical physicians.

Gabriel Ortiz, MD is board certified in Family Medicine and serves as our Secretary.

Having lived in the San Antonio area nearly all of his life, he joined BCMS in 2003 when he started his practice in San Antonio. He is the quiet gentleman with a ready smile that acknowledges everyone he meets. He is the younger physician who, after getting his feet wet, sees the possibility of making a difference. Dr. Ortiz, as last year’s Treasurer, made it his business to take care of the business of BCMS. His dedication to learning all that he could added not only to his performance, but to the care that he gave to BCMS. He is a physician with a real desire to represent his fellow physicians on the BCMS Board, and has welcomed the mentoring he has received these past few years. He has enjoyed his time with BCMS and plans to remain involved for years to come.

James Loyd Humphreys, MD is a board certified anatomical and clinical pathologist.

Dr. Humphreys serves as the 2010 BCMS Treasurer. He, too, is very active in not only our BCMS committees, but also with our sister-city medical society in Kumamoto, Japan. Dr. Humphreys brings to the table an abundance of knowledge and experience with the legislative and socioeconomics aspects of BCMS. He is a leader who has garnered a plethora of overall comprehension of our Society; and, he is committed to continue on this commendable path of encompassing all facets of medicine.

Roberto San Martin, MD is our Immediate Past President serving on the 2010 Executive Board.

Dr. San Martin was the 2009 President of BCMS. He is a board certified Ophthalmologist specializing in cataract and laser surgery, glaucoma and diabetic eye disease. Many people do not realize that Dr. San Martin is a very qualified photographer who has never hesitated to offer his skills―a true leader who takes the initiative, along with his camera!

Dr. San Martin is also a volunteer with Los Quijotes―health professional dreamers, like Don Quixote, who deliver therapeutic, diagnostic, surgical and educational services for the impoverished and underserved citizens of some of the poorest areas of Mexico. Since 1989, this medical services organization has worked to build bridges of service not only for the 3,000 patients seen per week while there, but also in sharing the knowledge to empower the local medical professionals and citizens. Los Quijotes also works to generate medical equipment donations for the annual mission each September.
